Steven McKay
is an Apathy is Boring artist.
Founding member and drummer for Bruce Peninsula steps out from behind the traps to croon and swoon with his sweet songs and booming baritone.
Up until now, he’s best known as the drummer for Bruce Peninsula and collaborator with Timber Timbre. This fall, Toronto’s beloved Hamiltonian, Steven McKay is stepping into the foreground with his debut solo album.
Drawing influence from The Zombies, Free Design, early Cat Stevens and AM Gold classics McKay’s self-titled release is doused in a warm 60/70's air filled with Ouuu’s, Ahhhh’s and even FaLaLa’s.
Produced and engineered by Leon Taheny (Final Fantasy, Ohbijou) the songs range from stripped down rootsy folk to bright sunshine pop to dark proggy, dance rhythms. Touching on ideas of urban decay, home sickness, Canadian landscape, and old friends, the songs utilize rich percussion, smart lyrics, accompanied by gorgeous vocal harmonies and embellished by cheeky chimes and fun vintage synthesizer flairs.

Interview
What music are you listening to / art are you checking out these days?
Mostly I've been listening to Gadzooks by Doctor Ew, my touring partner and labelmate. It's Drew Smith from the Bicycles' new project and his latest record has sort of a post-SMiLE era Beach Boys sound but with some guts. I listen to it everyday. As for art - I have become a major fan of Ginette Lapalme (ginettelapalme.com).
Why should people, especially youth, vote?
Because right now they aren't and that's why we we are living in a Stephen Harris...oops, I mean Stephen Harper world.
For you, is there a connection between art and democracy? What is it?
